How to Paper Piece - Page 1

Before we begin, a quick note about sewing... Set your machine stitch length to 12 to 15 stitches per inch (very small). These tiny stitches will help perforate the paper and make it easier to remove it when your're finished. Let's practice!

Trace or print out the sample block we will use for this exercise.

Remember: the printed design with the lines and numbers is where we'll be sewing (right on the paper), but our finished block will be viewed from the other side.

Cut a piece of fabric large enough to amply cover piece #1, at least ¼” larger around all sides. Turn your paper over to the RIGHT side -- that is, to the non-printed side. Place the fabric, right side up, over the area of piece #1. Hold the paper up to the light to make sure the entire area is covered, with enough of a seam allowance (preferably a little over ¼”). Hold this first piece of fabric in place with a straigth pin or fabric glue.

Cut a second piece of fabric large enough to amply cover piece #2.

Place the fabric for piece #2 RIGHT SIDE DOWN over the first fabric, aligining edges. Hold both fabrics right sides together in place with the straight pin.
