Andean Sunbathing

Although the equatorial line runs through this country giving it its name, Ecuador is also characterized by the Andes that cross it's entire length from north to south.

This means that though the sun rays hit directly, because of the high altitudes in the mountain area the climate tends to be cool-cold. This is quite clear when standing in the shade, which is why up here in the Andes mountains we tend to bundle up. On a bright sunny day, however, all it takes to warm up is to move to the sunshine for a bit... 5 to 10 minutes and we're toasty warm. That is what this wallhanging portrays: two women bundled up in their wool skirts and ponchos pausing to warm up in the bright Andean sun.

This wallhanging combines paper piecing, traditional piecing, and applique.
