When I first started quilting I had to learn on my own at that time (there were no quilting resources in my country), in what was a very intuitive process, pretty much in the same way as other women long ago sewed their own quilts. When I finally had access to resources via the Internet, I was amazed to discover how many quilting tools existed on the market. It will be up to you to decide how much you want to invest in these tools. With my own students, I start out with very simple tools: scissors, a ruler, a mechanical pencil, recycled materials for templates… and naturally fabric. This is all you need to get started.
However, I expect that in the same way as with so many other quilters, you will find this to be an enjoyable process and will want to invest in some tools that make the process easier. On the next pages you will find some simple guidelines to give you an idea of where to start. The best resource, however, is your local quilting store. You will find experts there willing to help and guide you as you decide what items are the most important ones for you to begin with.
