Adding Color: Rectangles

As we saw in the tutorial on folded Rectangle Blocks, adding other shapes (rectangles and triangles) adds movement to the Cathedral Window design. If on top of this we add a second color/fabric to our background block, the effects simply begin to be stunning!

For the rectangle block we will pretty much follow the same steps as for the square block. In this case, however, we will have to draft a template.

Drafting the Template

Please follow Steps 1-3 of the tutorial on folded rectangle blocks, under the section Drafting the Rectangle Template. You should end up with a diamond-shaped template. Add a 1/4" seam allowances to this template.

Sewing the Rectangle Block

Follow the same steps as in the case of the two-fabric square block:

1. For each block and using your diamond template, cut out one piece of two different contrasting background fabrics.

2. Right sides together, sew around all edges of the diamond shape, leaving a small opening to be able to turn the unit inside out. Clip corners and turn inside out. Slip-stitch opening closed.

3. Continue in the same manner as described in the previous tutorial for two-fabric square background blocks. Join rows of identical rectangle blocks or alternate the fabrics.

4. Here, too, adding Secret Windows and/or Windows will add more interest to your design.
