1. Right sides together, sew around all edges of two background squares together (contrasting fabrics), leaving a small opening to be able to turn the unit inside out. Clip corners and turn inside out. Slip-stitch opening closed

2. Fold all four corners until they meet in the center. Press. Below you can see both sides of the same block.

3. Decide if you want to fold all squares identically or alternate fabrics (checkerboard effect).

4. Place sewn squares together and sew along one of the folds.

5. Continue sewing the square blocks together in rows along block folds (as described in A Modern Approach).
