Adding Color: Triangles

Ok... you get it by now... As in the case of the rectangle block, you will also need to draft a new template for the triangle block.

Drafting the Template

Please follow Steps 1-4 of the tutorial on folded Triangle Blocks, under the section Drafting the Template for Triangle Blocks. You should end up with a template like the one indicated in the following illustration (the shape will vary slightly depending on the size of the finished triangle). Add a 1/4" seam allowances to this template.

Sewing the Triangle Block

Follow the same steps as in the case of the two-fabric square block (remember that in the case of triangles blocks you need two units to form one square block) :

1. For each unit and using your template, cut out one piece of two different contrasting background fabrics.

2. Right sides together, sew around all edges of the shape, leaving a small opening to be able to turn the unit inside out. Clip corners and turn inside out. Slip-stitch opening closed.

3. Continue in the same manner as described in the tutorial on two-fabric square block, first joining two triangle units to form one square block, and then joining them in rows. As seen previously, you can join rows of identical blocks or alternate the fabrics.

 4. The following illustration is a sample of rotated triangle blocks with two background fabrics and  windows. The four corner blocks are square Secret Garden blocks (again, with two background fabrics).
