Adding the Window

1. Place the fabric square you have selected for your window on the center square formed across the joined background squares. If necessary, trim until approximately 1/8" of the background fabric shows on all sides of window square. Pin in position, keeping pins in the center.

2. Beginning at one of the corners, fold the background fabric down over the edge of the window square, stretching the bias edge to form a curve. Stitch the folded edge down with an invisible stitch. (Note: on all instructions I've found for this technique, you are not supposed to stitch through all layers, but just through the top folded layer. However, I have seen several of these quilts where the quiltmaker did stitch through all layers. Once again, I think this is a matter of personal choice...)

Stop stitching at least 1/4" from the corner and bring both bias edges over the windows. Secure them with a double bartack stitch through all layers to give the corner more strength.

3. Finish sewing around all four sides:

So far you have completed your first Cathedral Window Unit. Repeat this same process, adding folded squares and windows to this first unit, until you reach the size you decided on for your quilt.
