Sewing the Triangle Block

1. Trace your template onto the wrong side of background fabric and cut out. Mark your side seams as illustrated below. (Believe me… otherwise it gets confusing, and you won’t know what edges to match!)

2. Sew sides A first. Sew sides B, but in this case only until 1/4” from the edge of the seam allowance (the red dot in the illustration). Repeat with the two sides marked C and stitch from the fold to a point ¼” from the seam line.

3. Open the piece and join point AA with point BB/CC. Sew this seam, leaving 1 to 2 inches open in the center to be able to turn it inside out. Turn the shape inside out. Press and sew down the center with two or three tiny stitches.

3. Bring corners A, B, and C to the center in turn, pressing firmly and keeping outside corners as sharp as possible.

4. Once again, you now have the choice of tacking the corners down and whipstitching your units together (as indicated in the tutorial on the The Basic Square Block or use the Modern Approach to join all background squares together before tacking down the corners.

You will need to join two of these triangles along their longer side to form a square, which you can then in turn join to other folded squares and/or rectangles to create new designs.
