Preparing the Base Block

1. Sew four folded squares following the instructions for the Basic Square Block, steps 1 through 4 (do not tack corners down yet). To remind you graphically, these are the steps:

2. Bring the four corners to the center and press in place, but do not stitch them down yet. After pressing, unfold them again. The fold lines should be clearly visible.

3. Join the four folded squares together (either whipstitching or sewing down the fold lines). Tack down the corners as indicated in the following illustration, leaving the 8 central triangles loose.
